TIME OUT

Most indie-rock bands from Louisville, KY, are in some way or another connected to Slint, and the Phantom Family Halo is no exception: It includes Michael McMahan, brother and occasional collaborator of that band’s frontman, Brian McMahan. PFH’s hypnotic, druggy psych-pop sounds about four decades older than it actually is; this may be a result of another L’ville connection in the band, to the out-and-not-coming-back psych collective Sapat, a group that summons wildly intense mind-altering forces. Midnite Snake is a like-minded outfit from Pittsburgh that gets to its tweaked state via Hendrixian rock played with atomic ferocity. Oh man—yeah. (And we really mean that.)
