HAIRBRAIN ARTICLE

Cool little article about HAIRBRAIN here:

or read it here:

Hairbrain - The Music Event You Don't Know About

In a city where media brings in $38 billion annually to the economy, it almost seems strange to find people creating it out of sheer love. Anyone who made it to the Hairbrain event last month can attest profits weren’t the priority, and nobody would have dared to find something better to do with their time.

Hairbrain is a new, FREE, monthly event taking place on the last Wednesday of every month. Organized by Cold Sweat Records and TeePee Records, it provides a free rock show, a variety of DJs, and all the cheap drinks you would ever want to hold down. Currently held at La Cita in Downtown Los Angeles, the venue could be one of the most diverse in the city where hipsters and Latinos equally share the dance floor throughout the week, whether it be the experimental sounds erupting from the turntables of a DJ, or the mariachi music spilling out of the jukebox.

Set up underneath flashing Christmas lights between a couple red leather booths, local favorites Tweak Bird brought their bass-y driven blend of rapid tempo rock and roll to last month’s event. Without a raised “above-the-masses” stage at La Cita, Hairbrain provides a much more intimate experience for seeing some of the most unique bands coming out of Los Angeles—February brings the swaggering sounds of The Icarus Line for a rare performance.

Sam Velde, captain of Cold Sweat Records, says the event was inspired by a no-bullshit concept of fun. While spinning records with Buddyhead co-founder Travis Keller at the Scene Bar in Glendale a few years back, the two had too good of a time to not provide more people with an outlet for music fitting outside the mainstream. After teaming up with TeePee, Velde hopes to showcase more bands and DJs from regions outside of Los Angeles.

Both Cold Sweat and TeePee are independent labels providing the base for a variety of bands Mtv will never be hip to. Cold Sweat produces records for the critically acclaimed prog-rockers Battles, as well as the impossibly aggressive and loud Lords and Coliseum. Some psychedelia slips through on their roster as well with the excellent Starlite Desperation.

TeePee may best be known for hosting The Brian Jonestown Massacre in the past, but the label has since added LA's The Warlocks, and some of the gloomiest metal and fuzz-rock you can shake your long-haired freak flag to in bands like Earthless and Witch.

Again, Hairbrain at La Cita may be the one event in your busy, Hollywood lives worth setting some time aside for. For a gasp of fresh air and affordable drinks, I can’t think of another place I’d rather be. Doors open at 9:00 pm.

AS ABOVE WILL BE BELOW

YA HA WO 13 - 'PENETRATION' CD !OUT NOW!

Were pleased to announce the long awaited re-issue of the classic Ya Ho Wa 13 recording "Penetration" is out now on Cold Sweat Records.

For those unfamiliar, Easily one of Ya Ho Wha's heaviest offerings, "Penetration, An Aquarian Symphony" is arguably revered as their best -- one of the finest sacred, psychedelic death trips of all time, for sure. Djin's tripped out guitar work coupled with Zinuru's soundscapes and Father Yod's bellowing moans and chants create some of the most intensely spiritual and epic passages put to tape.

It was 1972, time of the cult-occult-commune explosion. By day, the Source Family served organic cuisine to John Lennon, Julie Christie, Frank Zappa and others at the famed Source restaurant. By night, in a mansion in Hollywood Hills, they explored the cosmos through the channeled wisdom of their charismatic leader, Father Yod. Father was an outlandish figure who had 14 "spiritual wives," drove a Rolls-Royce, and fronted the rock band Ya Ho Wa 13, now considered by collectors to be one of the most singular psychedelic bands of all time.
